New to You: Our Favourite Places to Find Vintage and Antique Pieces in Montreal
There’s something special about finding a piece that already had a life before it landed in your home.
A vintage cabinet. A one-of-a-kind mirror. A previously loved chair with the perfect shape. A vase that feels like it was waiting quietly on a shelf for someone to bring it home.
At Arazi Design Studio, we love creating homes that feel layered, personal, and collected over time. Our signature style mixes modern design with antique and vintage pieces, natural materials, pattern, texture, and a touch of mid-century charm. It’s how we create spaces that feel fresh, but never flat. Polished, but not too precious. New, but not brand-new-everything.
Because sometimes, “new” really just means new to you.
Why we love mixing modern and vintage furniture
When every single piece in a room is new, a space can start to feel a little too perfect. A little too showroom. A little like no one has ever sat down with a cup of coffee and actually lived there.
Vintage and antique furniture bring in something you can’t always buy from a catalogue: character.
They add warmth, patina, history, and visual depth.
A modern sofa feels more interesting beside an antique side table.
It’s the mix of modern and vintage design that makes a room feel alive.
We’re not suggesting every home needs to become a full antique treasure chest. The goal is balance.
A few carefully chosen vintage pieces can soften a new space, add personality, and create that final one-of-a-kind detail that makes a room feel like yours.
Where to buy vintage and antique furniture in Montreal
Montreal has no shortage of places to find beautiful, unique, and sometimes unexpected secondhand furniture and decor. The key is knowing where to look, what to save, and when to walk away.
Here are some of our favourite places to shop for vintage furniture in Montreal.
Local vintage and mid-century furniture shops
If you prefer a more curated experience, Montreal has several excellent vintage furniture stores specializing in mid-century modern and antique pieces.
A few worth exploring:
Showroom MTL
A go-to destination for vintage and secondhand furniture in Montreal, especially if you’re looking for statement pieces with personality.
Bond Vintage 2.0
A great Montreal vintage shop to follow on Instagram if you love the hunt but want someone else to do some of the sourcing for you.
Morceau Montréal
A beautifully curated Montreal shop offering vintage furniture and decor with character and charm.
Shopping Tip: Before heading out, always check store hours. Many vintage furniture shops in Montreal don’t follow standard retail schedules, and there is nothing more disappointing than arriving ready to browse and finding a locked door.
Estate sales
Estate sales are another excellent way to find antique furniture and vintage decor in Montreal.
They’re especially great if you’re looking for pieces with soul: artwork, case goods, mirrors, lighting, dishware, books, and decorative objects.
The beauty of estate sales is that these items come from real homes, not warehouses. You’re seeing pieces that were lived with, collected, and cared for over time.
Many Montreal estate sale companies offer newsletters or mailing lists, making it easier to stay informed about upcoming sales. If you enjoy the thrill of the hunt, signing up for a few is worth it.
Go in with an open mind. Sometimes you find nothing. Sometimes you find the exact piece your space was missing.
Facebook Marketplace Montreal: A hidden gem for vintage finds
Facebook Marketplace has become its own little universe.
For me, it’s practically a pastime. I save hundreds of items I will probably never buy because I don’t always have time to trek across the city for a $30 vintage vase, no matter how perfect it is. It’s my version of window shopping.
But Marketplace really can be a goldmine.
You can find vintage dressers, dining chairs, lamps, artwork, mirrors, side tables, and accessories for a fraction of what you would pay new. Some pieces are ready to use right away, while others need a bit of imagination. A new lampshade, different hardware, fresh upholstery, or a good cleaning can completely change the story.
And if you’re handy, even better.
A very Montreal tip: July 1st is moving day in Quebec, which also happens to be the rest of Canada’s birthday. Make of that what you will. By July 2nd, Montreal streets are not exactly covered in confetti and flag bunting. They’re covered in abandoned furniture, mystery mattresses, and general chaos. The beer cans, though, those make both lists.
All this to say: around July 1st, people are desperate to offload things quickly. It’s a great time to scroll Marketplace, save listings, and see what treasures are being released back into the wild.
What to look for when buying vintage furniture
When shopping for vintage or antique furniture, try to look beyond the current styling and focus on the structure and quality.
Ask yourself:
Does the shape feel unique or timeless?
Is the scale appropriate for your space?
Is it solid and well-made?
Can it be updated with new fabric, hardware, or styling?
Does it offer something you wouldn’t find in new furniture?
Some of the best vintage pieces aren’t perfect, and that’s part of their charm. Patina, wear, and age can add warmth and authenticity to a space.
The key is knowing the difference between character and a project that may not be worth the effort.
For upholstered pieces, pay close attention to structure. Fabric can be replaced, but the frame matters.
For wood furniture, check drawers, legs, veneer, and stability.
For vintage lighting, ensure it can be safely rewired by a professional.
And if something has a strong or questionable smell, trust your instincts.
Why vintage furniture makes your home feel more personal
Vintage and antique pieces are often what make a room feel complete.
They’re the final layer. The detail that breaks up the newness. The piece that sparks conversation. The item no one else has.
They give your home a sense of story without making it feel outdated.
That’s why we incorporate vintage furniture into our interior design projects whenever it makes sense.
A well-designed home doesn’t need to be filled with only brand-new furniture to feel elevated. In fact, the most beautiful interiors combine old and new, clean and textured, and polished and imperfect.
Because your home shouldn’t feel like it was ordered all at once.
It should feel collected, intentional, and completely yours.
If you’re ready to design a space that feels personal, functional, and beautifully layered, we’d love to hear from you.
